ASSUMING YOU READ PANRATARIA BEFORE COMING HERE... this won’t be as big as route A, but
unlike what happened later in route a final stretch, a lot of things i was just thinking and architecting on the spot! this resulted in the absurd size that this OVA ended up being. at first, i was thinking of a really short story of 40-80 frames that would end with deekins' death before their wedding, and panrate's journey to the hall of time. in the end, i got so excited about adding things, trying to explore how deekins' experiences shaped him, and how he managed to filter out the good parts of deekins' teachings. i realized it was getting a bit much after the "pink pirate" part, so i started heading straight into the final fight. i completely removed the deeper romance part because i thought the character would work better if he couldn't confess his feelings, which i think i was WAY too nice by giving them cute scenes, because there would have been ZERO, NONE, IF I COULD IT WOULD BE NEGATIVE! But since i'm into yaoi and didn't want to make panrate suffer too much, i dropped a few cute bits... you should feel grateful...
(do i need to explain this?)
i had no idea what theme i was going to follow in the story, just how it would end. i thought it would be interesting if it explored how negative examples teach you not to replicate them and how good people sometimes have flaws, and you don't have to take all the bad parts to be inspired by them. in the end, i think I did a pretty good job explaining my point, because not only is deekins' methodology explained, but since you know both the good and bad parts of deekins, you know panrate did all that but better. also, i randomly had the idea for mental episodes, it started as something in the buna fight, and i thought it would be interesting to make this parallel between the two protagonists, showing their lowest points, and in the end, they are saved by things that remind them why they want to keep moving forward.
(reference from the cover i just showed!)
the references are probably the only two pirate movies i've ever seen, and my general knowledge. but a more solid reference was the entire aesthetic of the buna, which I got from a song. after thinking for a long time about names and aesthetics, i was listening to Diablo by WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA. i heard the vocalist say "dear buro," and after looking it up, I found out "buro" had something to do with a badger (don't quote me on that, it wasn't a very thorough search), and that's how the crew's identity came about.
(the song i mentioned)
now for the part that a lot of people love! let's start with some explosive ones (that blow me up). i'll be posting them as i didn't come up with a better way to organize everything. i'll comment on what i think is necessary, but if it's here and not in the comic, there's a reason! GORE WARNING (horrible drawings)
the rough draft of the buna uniform, logo, and the full design of the ship, which is named Mellivorinae, the scientific name of some badger
me experimenting to see how the stone attacks of buna would work
deleted panel because he was too evil
sorry for the gore, but this is the full body of the captain of the killer orcas. i tried so hard... ;-;
the first sequence i did of the ending. it was very rough, and the ending was originally supposed to end with the ship catching fire, not getting destroyed by a shark kick
i asked batista to make a design of him as a kid holding something that referenced samuloko being dead, he sent me this BANGER!! i wish i could use this design more, it's so rad...
i was going to make two frames to explain the parrot that appeared for just two frames. i got lazy and didn't do it. this one's are for his two fans..
i made this for a server announcement when the chapter was about to be released. i never saw it again, i found it looking for things to post here!
